28 December- Arly & Sandy Aronson Take On The Dakota Five-O. Friend Arly Aronson wrote to let us know that he and his intrepid stoker Sandy participated in the grueling 50 mile Dakota Five-O this past fall. The off-road endurance event is held on trails just south of Spearfish, South Dakota and include four major climbs and a net gain in elevation of 6,500 feet of climbing on single and double track. They and 145 other riders endured unseasonably warm temps when they began the race at 7:30am. You can read more about the event HERE and see photos of Arly & Sandy participating in the event HERE.

04 December - A Flash From the Past: The Tandem Scene in August 1994. While doing some research on older tandems I stumbled acros a fasinating article about Co-Motion tandems and the tandem industry in general. To read it in it's entirety please visit this Link to what I shared with the Tandem@Hobbes list. In general, back in '94 Co-Motion was still finding its way in the tandem market with its eyes set on upping tandem production to 200 units in '95. It's major competitors -- Burley & Santana -- were both producing somewhere around 1,000 - 1,300 units a year. Flash forward to another article in 2001 -- again, focusing on Co-Motion -- and their tandem business had reached 800 units a year. My "gut" tells me that Co-Motion has probably surpassed the 1,000 unit a year mark by now -- noting that their brand has become synonymous with "performance tandems" -- while Santana and Burley both continue to enjoy somewhat higher unit production numbers and/or sales revenue. As it was back in '94, Burley has carved out a niche as the "value builders" offering a wide range of box-stock tandem models that top out at $4,000, whereas Santana offers stock & custom models that begin at $2,900 and run well above $10,000 for exotic models and their multiseat tandems.

02 December - '06 Tandem Rally Information Now Being Posted. Several hundred serious, beginner, and would-be bicyclists from throughout the country will be heading to Mt Airy to ride, eat, renew old friendships, and try out many styles of bikes. Featured bikes include: Tandems - bikes for Two (or three, or four!); Recumbents - Bikes and Trikes with 'feet forward' positioning, like riding in a recliner - great for the neck, back, seat area, and arms; Special Needs Bikes and Trikes - for learning-disabled, balance challenged, and other disabilities; Folding and Travel bikes - Bikes that fold fast and get small; Electric Assist - electric/pedal powered with amazing speed and range; and, Shaft-Drive 'Chainless' bicycles - worry- , grime, and maintenance-free

A free catered lunch will be provided by Mt Airy Bicycles and New York J & P Pizza. Feb 25 - The "Tandem Geek" on The Weighty Subject of Tandem Bike Weight -- Since some mentioned that they'd be interested in seeing some different material here on the Bulletin Board I've decided to start sharing links to some of my more prolific postings to the various internet discussion forums I frequent. Today I was motivated to discuss the subject of what tandems weigh on the BikeForums.net tandem discussion list. Here is a link to my brilliant summary: http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=936287&postcount=1

Feb 23 - Motorist Who Struck & Killed David Martin Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charges & Found Not Guilty On Felony Charge -- On November 4, 2002, Cynthia Ann Richardson struck and killed local pro cyclist David Martin (38) when she swerved into the emergency lane along Georgia Highway 41 and hit David as he cycled home from work. Martin was survived by a wife and young son. Richardson was subsequently arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree and two counts of homicide by vehicle in the second degree. The case against Richardson went to trial on February 21, 2005 where Richardson plead guilty to the two misdemeanor 2nd degree charges and not guilty to the felony charge of homicide by vehicle in the 1st degree. On February 23, Richardson was subsequently found not guilty of negligence, which was the basis for the 1st degree felony charge. The jurors accepted the defense argument that Richardson was not driving recklessly and that this was just a terrible accident, despite Richardson's admission to being on medication containing methodone at the time of the accident and testimony by the responding officer wherein he stated he could say for sure that Richardson was on drugs at the time of the accident. Sentencing on the two lesser charges will occur on March 1st. The misdemeanor charges carry a maximum 1 year sentence. The felony charge of homicide by motor vehicle carried a sentence of up to 10 years.

Editor's Assessment: Jury trials are the way to go for motorists who strike and kill cyclists. After all, most jurors drive to court and few ride bicycles. Moreover, any defense attorney worth their salt will certainly prepare voir dire questions that identify the rare cyclist in the jury pool whom they would likely challenge for cause to ensure the jury was sympathetic to the motorist and the "just an accident" defense.

Feb 23 - Five UCI Pro Tour Squads To Compete In 2005 Tour de Georgia -- While this may not seem like a tandem-related subject, let me assure you that the "usual suspects" from the Tandem Club of Georiga (aka, PEACHES) are always out in force at the various stages for what will be the third edition of the Tour de Georgia professional cycling race in April. And, if there was any doubt why it's the place to be, the organizers announced today that the Discovery Cycling Team & Lance Armstrong, Phonak (Switzerland), CSC (Denmark), Credit Agricole (France), and Saunier Duval/Prodir (Spain) and 10 other squads will compete in this year's TdG on April 19 - 24. For more information, visit the Tour de Georgia Website: http://www.tourdegeorgia.com/

Feb 20 - LA Circuit Race on March 13 Features Tandem Class -- For those of you interested in racing your tandems, Back-on-Track Productions is holding the LA Circuit Race on March 13th at the Los Angeles International Airport. Feb 04 - www.TheTandemLink.com Has Moved! -- www.TheTandemLink.com has changed Web hosting services and 'www.TheTandemLink.com' will only be accessible in the future by using the www.TheTandemLink.com domain name. If you have created bookmarks or Web links to TheTandemLink.com using the URLs that would appear in your browser, e.g., http://home.att.net/~thetandemlink/ or http://home.att.net/~thetandemlink/http://tandemgeek.wordpress.com/tandem-rallies-event-listing/... they will soon go the way of the Dodo bird. At the new site, sub-pages will retain the
domain name as their root, e.g., http://www.TheTandemLink.com/http://tandemgeek.wordpress.com/tandem-rallies-event-listing/. On the bright side, I don't believe the new server is case-sensitive.
